backward-bendStretching can help to improve your range of motion and increase circulation, which are both conducive to health and well being. Stretching can also help you get a better night sleep and avoid cramps and tension that weigh down your mood and make it harder to motivate. Instead of trying to cram in all sorts of different stretches, doing a few full body stretches can help you to feel better quickly and get the maximum benefits in the shortest amount of time.

Standing Side Stretch

To start, stand straight in good posture with your feet together and your arms straight up over your head. Interlace your hands together, releasing the index fingers. Inhale and reach as high as you can, feeling the stretch through your shoulders, hips, and core. Exhale and bend your upper body to the right. Bend at the waist and be careful not to lean forward or backward. Take about five deep breaths, and then return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side.

Forward Hang

Stand in good posture with your feet hip width apart and your knees bent. Lace your hands together behind your back. Breathe in and straighten your arms behind you to expand your chest, getting a good stretch and increasing the volume of your inhalation. Exhale and bend all the way forward, bringing your arms straight up over your head. Release the tension in your neck and shoulders and let your head hang freely. Stay in this position as you take about five breathes, then return to the starting position and repeat.

Backward Bend

To start, stand with your feet together and your arms straight up over your head. Interlace your fingers and release your index fingers. Inhale and reach as high as you can, allowing the knees to lock as the legs straighten completely. Let the head drop backwards as far as possible, moving the arms as is tracing a line straight back across the ceiling and to the wall behind you. Hold the posture for a few seconds, then raise back up to standing slowly, feeling the vertebrae come back into alignment. Repeat the posture one time, for best results.
